“ | You don't find any of this fun unless you can throw some fists around, huh? It's not that I don't get it. We were all like that before, too. But... being able to talk to people... and being needed by them... this kinda stuff... can be pretty fun, too. | ” |
"Shishitoren" (獅子頭連?) is the fifth chapter of the first volume and the fifth chapter overall of the WIND BREAKER manga series, written and illustrated by Nii Satoru.
Overview
Sakura is assigned under the Tamon Team led by Toma Hiragi. Together with Nirei, Suo, Sugishita, and Hiragi, he patrols the town to mark their dominance against other delinquents and protect its civilians. After helping out an old woman, they stumble upon a tunnel leading to another part of the area belonging to a rival gang called Shishitoren. A middle schooler gets chased by Shishitoren, but Sakura and Sugishita fight back to defend him.
Summary
Nirei and Sakura are painting over vandalized walls as Suo watches.
Thirty minutes earlier, Class 1-1 exit the building to go to the school field. Sakura complains about this and gets scolded by Takeshi Enomoto. Upon their arrival, Toma Hiragi scolds them for being late. Sakura recognizes him from the unexpected attack yesterday, in which a group of delinquents attacked Kotoha Tachibana. Before Sakura can tell Nirei about it, Hiragi demands him not to mention Kotoha's name in fear of angering a certain man. Hiragi walks away, warning Sakura that he has ended up in the hands of a peculiar captain.
Sakura reconvenes with the class and describes Hiragi as an irritable man. Nirei tells him that Hiragi is one of the Four Kings of Bofurin and that he commands the Tamon Team, consisting of three classes across different year levels under the central command of Umemiya. Hiragi instructs the class to split up into four or five-member groups with an upperclassman as the leader. Moments later, Sakura, Nirei, Suo, Sugishita, and Hiragi patrol the town together as a team under Umemiya's orders. Sakura points fingers at Sugishita for initiating their previous fight, but Hiragi breaks them apart.
Sakura questions their patrol duty, reasoning that they are merely walking around town instead of protecting it. He suggests that they look for troublemakers to take down immediately, but Hiragi refuses. He tells Sakura that they do not need to strike first since parading their uniforms alone is enough. While Sakura calls their duty boring, Hiragi runs to an old woman on top of a ladder, trying to paint over a graffitied wall herself. Hiragi calls the team over, and they paint the wall on their own. Sakura is enraged, but the owner gives them free taiyaki afterward.
As the group walks away, Hiragi tells Sakura that their work as Bofurin members are fun as they feel that they are needed by the people. Suddenly, they hear a loud sound come from a nearby tunnel. Sakura spots a graffitied symbol on the tunnel's entrance and identifies it as a dog. Nirei warns him that they must not past the tunnel since beyond it is the territory belonging to Shishitoren, a rival gang. Moments later, a middle school boy appears at the other side of the tunnel, and he is chased by members of Shishitoren. When the boy trips, Shishitoren advances, but Sakura and Sugishita strike first to defend him.
