Choji Tomiyama (兎耳山 丁子, Tomiyama Chōji?) is the leader of Shishitoren.
Appearance
Tomiyama is a short boy with wavy beige hair, prominent black eyes, and a large closed-mouth smile. He is commonly seen wearing the Shishitoren jacket over a white shirt, a pair of black sweatpants, and rubber shoes for footwear.
Personality
Tomiyama is a strong fighter who is quick to challenge others and does so with an overjoyed attitude. He initially strived to be at the top of the hierarchy to fulfill his desire to become happier and freer like Hajime Umemiya, believing that greater power was used to attain greater freedom. Whenever his philosophy was challenged, he became stern with his commands, acting indifferently toward his men.[1] He expelled those he saw as weaklings from Shishitoren and challenged people who held great power in order to achieve his vision for the team. After he lost to Umemiya, Tomiyama learned to recognize his mistakes and act for the better.
History
When Tomiyama first joined Shishitoren with Jo Togame, they were told that power was used to attain freedom and that they must persist through tough times to prove themselves as strong. Despite being newcomers, he and Togame went against a rival gang called Zinc, whom they defeated for Numa, their ally. Togame deemed Tomiyama fit as Shishitoren's first-in-command who could transform it for the better, but Tomiyama had conflicting views. When Tomiyama rose to power as leader, he was unsatisfied with the role and found it dull, prompting him to create a team as strong as himself. He expelled those who sought his help from the gang, treating them as "weaklings" for failing to persevere on their own, and forced Togame to follow his commands as he strived for his desires.[2]
Story
Shishitoren arc
A day after the encounter between Furin High students and Shishitoren's second-in-command, Tomiyama challenges Hajime Umemiya to a fight, dragging along a bruised Bofurin member to provoke him. Tomiyama attacks when he rejects his challenge, but he is swiftly blocked. He reveals that he wants to defeat Umemiya out of envy for his leadership and thrilling lifestyle. Later on, Jo Togame appears with Shishitoren and advices Tomiyama that it is difficult to fight Umemiya with the rest of Furin High watching them. To Umemiya's dismay, Tomiyama suggests a one-on-one tournament where select members of both gangs will brawl.[3]
On the day of the tournament, Tomiyama welcomes Bofurin to Shishitoren's turf[4] and leads them to its headquarters. He begins the tournament and watches each duel.[5] When Togame loses to Haruka Sakura, he asks Tomiyama to stop the tournament seeing as there is no justice in fighting. Tomiyama ignores his requests and kicks him aside, prompting Sakura to charge at him not long before Umemiya steps in.[6]
The duel against Umemiya begins. Tomiyama praises Bofurin's strength and pities Shishitoren for being significantly weaker than them, which sparks a reaction from his underlings. If he wins against Umemiya, Tomiyama believes that he will have control over both gangs and at the same time become happier and freer than anyone else, ridding himself of a boring life. He attacks Umemiya who retaliates swiftly, but neither of them accept defeat.[7] After a handful of attacks, Umemiya tells him that his fists are powerless because he does not fight for anything, which provokes Tomiyama to fight until he obtains his freedom. Umemiya pities him for being incapable of understanding his emotions and even more so for being an irresponsible leader. Tomiyama realizes that Shishitoren has changed for the worse,[8] causing him to launch an all-out attack at Umemiya, who does not fight back. They both recall a past encounter when Shishitoren had not been tainted by Tomiyama's leadership,[9] and with much discourse, Tomiyama accepts defeat and apologizes to Togame for what he has done to him and the gang.[10]
Tomiyama settles the brawl and hands over leadership, but Umemiya refuses to take over Shishitoren and decides to become friends instead. After the fight, he, Togame, and the Bofurin members host a picnic,[11] where Tomiyama asks Umemiya how he stays happy while being the leader of Bofurin. Umemiya explains that he indulges in gatherings where everyone enjoys themselves and that being the top of Bofurin has nothing to do with hanging out with friends. Tomiyama realizes why his fists were powerless and concludes that he can never win against Umemiya.[12]
After the picnic, both gangs part ways. Left alone with Togame, Tomiyama acknowledges his mistakes. Togame apologizes as well, but affirms Tomiyama that they must face what has been done and resolve their issues together.[13]
